'National Science Day' is celebrated in India on February 28 each year. This day is observed to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman on 28 February 1928. Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (C. V. Raman) was born on 7 November 1888 at Thiruvanaikoil, Tiruchirappalli, Madras Province, India. C. V. Raman passed his B.A. examination in 1904 in first place and won the gold medal in physics, and in 1907 he gained his M.A. degree with the highest distinctions.Sir C. V. Raman was an Indian physicist whose work was influential in the growth of science in India. He was the first Indian scientist to be honoured with the prestigious Nobel Award in Physics in the year 1930. His discovery 'Raman effect' or 'Raman scattering' is popularly known as an inelastic scattering of a photon. He was honoured with a large number of honorary doctorates and memberships of scientific societies.
National Science Day is observed to spread the message of importance of science and its application among the people. This day is celebrated to accelerate the pace of development. National Science Day brings an opportunity to focus on issues related to science and technology.
