The 'National Flag of India' is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which has 24 spokes.
The saffron color indicates the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band, indicates peace and truth. The green band shows the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land. The chakra shows that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The ratio of length of the flag to its width is 3:2. The diameter of the chakra approximates to the width of the white band.
The design of the national flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 22 July 1947.
