'World Thalassemia Day' is observed on 8th May every year. This day is observed to increase the awareness about this disease among common people through out the world. World Thalassemia Day on 8th May was established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
 
Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive blood disorders which gets inherited from parents to the children through genes. It is a blood disorder causes weakening and destruction of the red blood cells. It is an inheritable disease.
 
World Thalassemia Day is celebrated in order to raise the public awareness about this disease, prevention measures and measures to avoid its transmission. This day is dedicated to commemorate the thalassemia patients. On this day, various events and activities are held in the public places and educational institutions to increase the awareness about the disease among common public.
